The National Monuments are Our Glory!

A recent visit to Washington, D.C. opened my eyes to the rich heritage we share on our national mall.  The stately, well cared for monuments on the mall belong to us all, and are a shining reminder of our past and how far we have come.  The stories of our past presidents and their important quotations can bring tears.  Franklin Delano Roosevelt is sculptured in his wheel chair revealing his true image and one that was not shared openly during his presidency.  Elenore Roosevelt standing strong in a nearby scupture depicts the couple as they were and not as they wanted to be preceived.  President Lincoln sitting calmly in his chair and the Jefferson memorial are at opposite ends of the mall awaiting discovery.

The Vietnam Memorial with thousands of names of our fallen fellow citizens reminds us of the sacrifices that have allowed us to have the freedom we share today.  The majestic pillars and fountains at the WWII Memorial (pictured above) are a serene and peaceful place that honors our fallen and surving soldiers of that war.

Dr. Martin Luther King’s memorial with his famous quotations are a source of pride for all of us who support and have struggled for civil rights for all our citizens.  The scupture is realistic and grand at the same time.  It is a symbol of what common people can accomplish when they come together for the greater good.

Our nation’s capitol and the White House are as majestic as the palaces of foriegn lands.  We do not have a royal family, but we can visit the home of our first family and revel in its grandure.  We should be proud of our national monuments and visit them often.
